The Claddagh Ring is a major piece of jewelery exported from Ireland. I bought one recently myself and Im only finding out now that it originates in Italy.
The Italian ‘Fede’ ring is an old roman tradition that was popularised during the rennaissance. It became popular the world over and it was only in the 1840s with the gaelic movement that we rebranded it a ‘Claddagh’ ring based on the name of a western part of Ireland and made up a story about it.
What can you say, its an irish expression of a european tradition and I really like that. You wear the heart facing in if youre with someone and the heart facing out if youre single. But I was mislead my whole life about it.
I understand shilling things to tourists but for me to be taken in. Damn. Thats good ye olde marketing.
